Four soldiers sitting on the axles of a gun- or ammunition-limber. The wheels of the limber are heavily covered in thick mud and it is possible that it had just been pulled out of the mud after being stuck. Mud was a constant problem on the Western Front. Many of the transports for guns and ammunition were limbers rather than rigid-based carts. On a limber, the two pairs of wheels were articulated separately. This made it easier to manoeuvre them around in the difficult conditions. [Original reads: 'Muddy wheels of an ammunition cart.'] http://digital.nls.uk/74549552

A Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2 on a roof, Western Front, during World War I. This photograph of an aeroplane which has crash-landed on the roof of a building is a dramatic illustration of the flimsy nature of the early fighter planes. There is remarkably little apparent damage to the roof but the wood and fabric framework of the plane's tail has folded up around a chimneystack. Even as late as the spring of 1917, the Royal Flying Corps were losing about 50 planes every week. When possible, as appears to be happening in this case, the wreckage was salvaged and re-used.
