![Men hauling a howitzer out of the mud, Western Front. The photographer, whose shadow can be seen in this picture, has recorded a group of soldiers struggling in the mud to move a howitzer which had just been captured. As the conditions of the trenches became apparent, waders were issued. They were kept in the trenches and used by each successive battalion during their spell in a particular trench. The howitzers were short-barrelled guns which could fire very heavy shells, often over considerable distances. They were particularly useful against fortified positions.
