Folds picked out by limestone ridges, Upper Cretaceous, St Chinian, Hérault, S France. The limestones are non-marine lake deposits of Late Cretaceous (Maastrichtian) age. Between the limestones are softer mudstone units which erode more rapidly, and seen as vegetated areas. In this view, the sequence is upside down, as a result of folding and thrust faulting during the Pyrenean mountain-building event. Grape vines, seen in the foreground, are mainly grown on soils developed on softer geological units. Saint-Chinian is an important wine-producing area. par Rjsuthren (CC BY-SA 3.0)
