The tower was formerly part of a castle which dated from the 11th-12th centuries. A small village (Creu) was also located on this site, but that ceased to be inhabited at the beginning of the 20th century. The tower had mostly fallen into ruin by the early 21st century, but it was restored in 2014. The view (towards the south, in the direction of Matemale village) is from the top of the restored medieval Tour de Creu (Creu Tower). The remains of part of Creu village, which formerly existed below the tower, can also be seen. The tower and village were built on an outcrop of Hercynian granite. The outcrop is slightly detached from the Mont-Louis granite massif, which rises in the forested area to the left. par Alan Mattingly (CC0)
